The basics of choosing the right backpack

popular BackpacksBe it for your everyday work or for a hiking trip, when you need to carry a lot of things, a backpack is an ideal companion. Backpacks can be used by everyone, as it is highly versatile. If you ride a motorcycle and have ample motorcycle luggage then a backpack is a good way to carry it. It provides a good hands free experience of carrying the luggage, as backpacks come with shoulder straps. For the purpose of extensive hiking, the usual choice is a Swiss backpack. While buying a backpack, you have to make sure that it perfectly fits your requirements. Given below is a quick guideline on the basics you should check to buy the right backpack for you.

How much volume do you need?
When you are getting a backpack for yourself, you basic criterion is to carry all your luggage in it. There are a big number of popular backpacks available in the market. But these bags come in different sizes and they will obviously have different volume. The usual ways in which backpacks are sized is litres or cubic inches. The length differs too. Now, when you are about to buy a backpack, you must decide on the length of your trip first. If it is just for a weekend trip or an overnight stay, then you do not really need to buy a huge backpack. This is because, the amount of luggage you will be carrying will be less. On the other hand, if you are going off on a long hiking trip or a month long tour, then you will be carrying a lot more stuff with you. Hence, the backpack you pick has to big accordingly. This would be your first point to check when choosing a backpack.

Are you comfortable carrying the backpack?
Another important point to consider, after deciding the volume of the backpack is whether you are getting the right kind of suspension with the backpack. If say, your trip is a long one or the hiking type, then you would have to carry the backpack on your back a lot. Backpacks cannot be carried alternatively in hand – it is structured to be carried on shoulders. Unless you are comfortable carrying it on your back, it will not do justice to your need. So, make it a point to check the suspension well. If you will be carrying a lot of weight, then it is better if the backpack comes with an adjustable hip belt. The shoulder straps should be wide enough and not dig into your shoulder. It should fit you comfortably. A sternum belt could be a good idea for additional fit. Overall, the belts should all be adjustable.

Does it have ample pockets?
This point is often underrated, but pockets are an important part of a good backpack. You need these extra compartments to carry your small stuff or other important documents – so that you can get access to them immediately without having to dig through the entire bag.
